Analyst: Palm Pre Launch Will Be A Failure

John Biggs TechCrunch.com Friday, May 1, 2009 Collins Stewart analyst Ashok Kumar (not this guy) is claiming that the Palm Pre will be a dud and that shortages, manufacturing problems, and Sprint's relative suckitude as a carrier will push the $199 smartphone straight to the bottom. While I welcome this bracing opinion of everyone's darling, it seems Kumar has some sort of bone to pick and is bringing up concerns you could have for any phone, including the iPhone. He writes:Collins Stewart analyst Ashok Kumar claims that his supply chain checks indicate that Palm has ?drastically reduced its production orders? for the Pre. Kumar says ?multiple hardware and software issues? have forced Palm?s hand here and that he doesn?t expect the company to meet its expected goal of one million units shipped in the second half of 2009. He even goes so far as to describe that figure as ?highly unrealistic.?

Their current system's extensions terminate on a 66 block or another type of termination field backboard. The terminations and configurations differ from the new system. For example, the old PBX might be a Mitel 200X, and the new one is a Mitel 200 ICP. The old system's station cards have 12 ports, while the new ICP has 24 port cards. Additionally, the CO lines on the old system are configured with 8 ports, skipping every other pair, while the new system has an 8x4 combo card with LS/GS lines not skipping any pairs. Challenge: How do you get the wiring ready for a smooth and fast cutover, minimizing troubles and cutting in the new machine as quickly as possible? Solution: Instead of re-crosswiring each individual station device and CO line—which is extremely time-consuming and prone to errors—a new approach is available...
